Affected Areas
The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is the largest natural disaster ever to threaten the United States, and the environments and economies of the Gulf States are in grave danger. Oil has already invaded the bayous and coastal waters of Louisiana, and is threatening the barrier islands of Mississippi and Alabama. Residue has also been found washing ashore beaches on Florida’s panhandle, and with a potentially record-breaking hurricane season approaching, oil could soon be washed ashore Texas as well.
The truly catastrophic effects of the oil spill are still developing. While the fishing, tourism, and other coastal industries in these states have already been seriously impacted, the true damage may still be on the horizon.
States Affected
According to some estimates, all five of the Gulf Coast states are at risk from the oil spill. The Gulf Coast oil spill lawyers of Williams Kherkher have information concerning the states which are, or could soon be, affected by the oil spill, including:
Of these five states, Louisiana is currently the hardest hit by the oil spill, as the Deepwater Horizon was positioned 50 miles southeast of the state’s coast. The oil has begun to creep through the coastal bayous of the state, with many of Louisiana’s coastal parishes requesting federal governmental assistance.
However, the enormous output of the gushing oil well has also put the coasts of Louisiana’s neighbors in danger, and tar balls have begun to wash ashore on the barrier islands of Mississippi and Alabama, as well as the famous panhandle beaches of Florida. Many experts are concerned that this is merely the first sign of an even more serious threat.
