BP’s Health Monitoring Settlement

Oil giant, BP, recently announced that, in addition to paying out many claims for economic loss due to the 2010 oil spill, it would also initiate a health monitoring plan to observe the health of those who were exposed to the Deepwater Horizon Gulf oil spill. For 21 years, BP’s plan will monitor affected people’s health and may award funds to cover the costs of medical treatment for illnesses that might arise due to exposure to the oil. The length of time has been established to cover those who will potentially develop illnesses far into the future, but who do not have symptoms currently.

If you or someone you know has been affected by the BP oil spill and has concerns about future illnesses or poor physical effects, this new plan may affect you. To learn about your legal options, contact the experienced Gulf coast oil spill lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-821-1544.

The New Plan

Health monitoring plans can further complicate the already difficult process of pursuing a legal action. For those who are making considering a civil lawsuit based on the premise that the BP oil spill caused physical illnesses or other problems for them, several things will need to happen, including:

  1. A proven connection between an illness and the BP oil spill.
  2. A health examination by a court-approved medical practitioner.
  3. Litigation involving negotiations of payment, if a connection is proven.
  4. A waiting period for payment of claims to be made.

BP has stated that it has allocated funds specifically for health-related concerns that arise because of the oil spill, so you be able to obtain appropriate financial compensation.
