BP refuses to reimburse wildlife preserve for expenses

The Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge (ECWR) in Northwest Florida is dedicated to rescuing sea turtles and marine animals which have been injured as a result of the BP oil spill. However, the donations the volunteers of the ECWR get from private citizens are not enough to keep them going, and BP is refusing to reimburse them for the expenses.

The refuge – which is required to do everything within its power to save oil-covered animals – requested a $3,000 reimbursement from BP for costs associated with the helping animals injured in the spill, but was turned down flat. According to BP, accepting both donations and reimbursements for the company would amount to “double-dipping.” A spokesman for the company suggested that, as a volunteer organization, ECWR had no right to expect reimbursement for their work.

Meanwhile, the refuge continues its work to treat and rehabilitate the animals injured as the result of the tragic oil spill, slowly hemorrhaging money.
