Researchers at North Dakota State University and Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources have found evidence of oil spill residues on the eggs of pelicans nesting at the state’s Marsh Lake.

The lake serves as the largest colony for American White Pelicans in North America. These pelicans migrate from up north to the Gulf of Mexico in September, where they are found as far away as Cuba.

The researchers are most worried about polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the primary constituents of oil. These substances are known to cause cancer and birth defects in animals. They were also concerned about Corexit, the chemical that was used to disperse oil slicks on the ocean’s surface.

The study found petroleum compounds on 90 percent of the eggs of the first batch of it tested. Corexit was present on 80 percent of the batch. With such overwhelming results in these initial tests, the environmental impact of the BP oil spill cannot be denied.

Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier preliminarily approved a settlement against BP for the 2010 gulf oil spill. He will hold a further hearing on November 8 before giving his final approval on the matter.

BP estimates that the proposed settlement will cost the company $7.8 billion. Over 100,000 claims have been filed against BP for various economic losses sustained by people in the area affected by the spill.

The class-action settlement does not include federal or state claims against the company, which are more concerned with the environmental impact of the spill.

Members of the American Shrimp Processors Association have requested a federal judge delay his decision on a $2.3 billion settlement. The shrimp processors feel that they are unfairly excluded from the settlement.

The settlement is meant for seafood-related claims. The shrimp processors argue that they play a very important role in the industry and have suffered losses equal to those of shrimping boats that are included in the settlement.

BP will be paying out more than $7 billion to businesses and other groups who suffered adverse effects as a result of its disastrous 2010 oil spill.

Former BP engineer Kurt Mix has been charged with obstruction of justice after deleting hundreds of text messages from his phone that contained important information concerning the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. The company specifically ordered employees to retain all information concerning the oil well, including text messages.

He is the first person to face criminal charges in relation to the BP oil spill.

Mr. Mix is being accused of deleting important information about the spill’s rate of flow. A precise measurement of the oil that spilled into the ocean is a crucial detail because it determines how much BP will be fined in accordance with the US Clean Water Act.

Mr. Mix was part of a team BP set up to determine how much oil was being drained into the ocean. Mix exchanged texts with one of his supervisors and a contractor during his time on this special internal team.

Of the over 200 texts that were deleted, investigators were able to forensically recover some of them. Recovered texts indicated that the actual amount of oil gushing from the well was much higher than BP’s public reports indicated. One such text put the measurement at over 15,000 barrels a day, while the public report was only 5,000 at the time.

The BP oil disaster had a profound environmental impact on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Officials with BP along with attorneys representing plaintiffs in the case have proposed a plan to discuss the terms of the $7.8 billion Deepwater Horizon rig explosion that caused an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

This plan will resolve the billions of dollars in order to pay out the private party claims that includes more than 100,000 individuals and businesses.

This plan does not resolve the lawsuits that were brought against BP from Gulf states or the federal government. A conference has been set up from May 3 in order to discuss the claims that have not been covered by this plan.

BP Plc has recently accused federal officials of withholding evidence that would prove that the oil spill leaked fewer barrels of oil into the ocean than U.S. officials have stated.

BP has stated that the government did not show evidence that would prove that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico was less than the 4.9 billion barrels, which was the number estimated by the government.

The exact amount of the oil spilled is important because the fines that the company must pay under the Clean Water Act depend on the size of the spill. With this current estimation, BP could pay up to $17.6 million. BP claimed that there are over 10,000 documents in the government’s possession that they need to turn over because the “appear to relate to flow rate issues.

After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, officials have stated that balls of tar continue to wash up on the shore, especially after recent storms. Scientists have stated that this could be an issue, because they may contain deadly bacteria.

Researchers from Auburn University stated that tar balls found months after the spill contained high levels of Vibrio vulnificus. This type of bacteria is the leading cause fatal seafood-borne illness.

This type of illness has a fatality rate of anywhere from 20 to 30 percent of people who contract it. Officials have stated that people who live in the Gulf coast area should avoid these tar balls, especially if they have open wounds or weak immune systems. These tar balls are what is still left from the nearly 4.9 billion gallons of oil that spilled into the ocean as a result of the sinking of the oil rig.

Patrick Juneau, the new administrator under the new legal settlement, has stated that the first claims were sent between March 8 to March 21.

It has been stated that nearly 1,096 claims were sent out and they totaled tonearly $27 million. Over half of the claimants were decided under Fienberg’s control, but the terms were not accepted before the end of February.

These claimants have already received 60 percent of what Feinberg said that they would receive, but under the new legal terms, they will not have to sign anything that will permit them from suing BP or any other parties considered responsible for the oil spill.

A terms of a large Gulf oil spill lawsuit will be filed in a New Orleans U.S. district court will be filed by April 16, according to a district judge. The judge also stated that a conference with lawyers will be set up for May 3 in order to go over the remaining aspect in the case.

The conference is meant to discuss the last few issues before the actual trial can begin. This trial is against BP and the other parties that have been said to be responsible for the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drill, which caused the Macondo well to rupture and spill oil into the Gulf.

The lawsuit was brought upon from local, state and federal governments after nearly 4.9 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico.

Claims payments made from the Kenneth Feinberg Gulf Coast Claims Facility will now continue into the Court Supervised Oil Spill Settlement Process.
