According to officials, nearly $5 billion of the $20 billion fund that was set aside in order to compensate those who were affected by the devastating 2010 oil spill has been used at this time.

The Gulf Coast Claims Facility took over the claims process in August 2010 and has approved 38 percent of all claims that have been filed, which totals to 947,892. Claims have been received from all 50 states and 36 different countries.

Residents and businesses in Florida have been paid nearly $2 million and Louisiana recipients have received nearly $1.5 billion. These are the top two states that have been compensated. Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas make up the rest of the top five.

The man in charge of the fund, Kenneth Feinberg, was said to be too generous with payouts by BP, but the government was said to be too strict. Claimants who were denied their claims have said this process is unfair and the GCCF will be processing claims until August 2013.
