Oil spill claims fraud low in comparison to total claims

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill that happened last year left numerous people filing oil spill claims. The Gulf Coast Claims Facility was set up in order to accommodate these claims and to date has paid out roughly $6 billion to cover the damages.

As of now there have been 30 people who have been convicted of fraud charges in relation to the filing of these claims. If convicted the individual may serve possible jail time and will be required to refund the amount they were given in their claim.

There have been over one million claims filed by individuals. Of that number, the claims administrator is doubtful of 13,000 claims. This is a very low number which sheds light on the fact that most people submitting these claims are in clear need of reimbursement for the damages they suffered due to the oil spill.
