Residents worry about tourism and fishing after oil spill

Posted on June 8th, 2010 No Comments

Nearly seven weeks after the oil spill, hundreds of thousands of patches of oil are heading in different directions and making their way to the coastline. Residents along the coast that depend on tourism and fishing are wondering how they can salvage the season.

An owner of a surf shop in Panama City Beach, who depends on the tourists  to buy souvenirs, has recently been told that oil will be reaching the beach within 72 hours. He has been calling vendors to tell them to stop sending shipments of flip-flops, t-shirts and other beach attire.

The oil spill’s patchy nature is also confusing tourists who are trying to plan summer vacations because they are not sure where the oil will be when it is time for their beach trip. People who rely on fishing to make a living are also facing difficulty. Even if there is no oil in their area, business is still slow because people think that seafood from the gulf coast area is not safe.
